Negative Signs of Revival Jonathan Edwards
I John 4:1-6
The presence of strange things does not mean that a work is not of God. Historically, unusual and extraordinary things happen during revival, surely things the Church is not “used to.” There are the effects on human bodies- tears, groaning, trembling, falling, failure of strength. There is a noise and publicity associated with the move and there are effects on the human imagination (ecstasy).

AMERICAN CHRISTIAN #4
Negative Signs of Revival (continued)
A move of the Spirit should not be judged negatively because truth is being spoken (Matt 5:16; 1 Tim 4:12) as Christians we should be the example to others; a model as how Christians should live. Or on the other hand that participants in the move are guilty of irregularities of conduct (church in Corinth). Some will see errors in judgment and delusions of Satan (Exodus 8:5-7). There will be those that fall away into scandalous practices; those that insist on the terror of God’s law and hell as seen in Modesto, CA in the 1990’s.

Positive signs of Revival
I John 4:1-6
One of the great leaders of revival, Rev. Jonathan Edwards, is still feeding us from beyond the grave. In this episode we focus on his teaching about the positive signs of revival. What do we mean by positive signs? For example, does the work of revival raise the esteem of the people for Jesus, will there be an array of work against the kingdom of Satan? There will be a higher regard for Scripture and a clarification between the Spirit of Truth that draws out the spirit of error. And finally, does the work establish love in the hearts of people?

Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Dr Nichols and Pete Couper discuss some of the conclusions (inferences) Rev. Jonathan Edwards came to on the Spirit that is at work during revival. Edwards pointed out it seemed as the vanities of the world were taken off their mind; they become engaged in a deep concern about eternal happiness and earnestly sought out their salvation. These believers were convinced of the dreadfulness of sin and of their own guilty and miserable natural state. It is remarkable because it awakens men’s consciences to the dreadfulness of God’s anger, causing a great desire to obtain His favor. Does this begin to chasten our own 21st century views of what revival does to those that will draw near to being re-vived?

Regional Impact of Revival
Acts 19:11-20
During the revival period in the 1730’s, Rev Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield played contrasting roles the Kingdom of God. God will choose the man or the woman as His voice piece (Judges 6). But, we also see dramatic signs and wonders in the region when an awakening rises. You can be sure of this: God is the Author of it, doing His work in the hearts of the young and old. People gathered and conversed to speak about spiritual things, there was an attention to the Word of God, prayer and fasting. Imagine the reduction of “tavern-haunting” (bar hopping and carousing in these type of establishments). There is also an impact on the youth where even lewd songs and revelry (partying) diminish. Profoundly, there is much greater charitable giving to the poor (Gal 2:10). Imagine what the regional impact would be like today.

There is strong evidence of God’s working power in the hearts of His people. The masses gathered together and were affected by the preaching in the Great Awakening through the chorus of revival preachers. Today we are reading from a sermon by Rev. Samuel Stillman a Baptist preacher born in 1737. there were strong overtones that slavery was against the Kingdom of God. From 1765 Stillman was minister of the Brattle Street Church of Boston, Massachusetts, until his death. John Hancock, although a Unitarian, was one of his admirers and often rented a pew there so that he could hear him. President John Adams and General Henry Knox also came to hear him preach. The Great Awakening brought a sensitivity to the Word of God; this becomes the driven desire of the people to form a “more perfect union”.
